Our Services

Ethics Consult offers a variety of services:

Professional Practice Ethics Management

Ethics Consult offers ethics management services to mental health practitioners who practise independently, and those working in association with others. Our facilitation assists professionals to be alert to and intentional about ethics, and manage their practices using ethics mindfulness and skill.

We follow a methodical process, directed by the pace you set, to assist you to:

  • Develop an integrity framework for your practice.
  • Put measures in place to ensure that your practice is ethically compliant.
  • Identify ethics risks associated with the kind of work you typically do.
  • Create a strategy to pro-actively manage ethics risks.

We have learned through experience that it works best to follow this process systematically.

Ethics Coaching

Ethics coaching is helpful when faced with a client-specific matter or organisational scenario that causes moral unease. The aim of ethics coaching is to clarify what the ethics considerations may be, and to consider a reasonable and justifiable way forward.

Ethics Consult uses a logical and methodical technique that helps to identify the underlying ethics considerations in a situation. We explore the situation though various ethics lenses, drawing from different theoretical models. For example, context-specific duties and rights (from an ethical point of view), what the consequences of specific actions might be, and which ethics values may trump others in a particular situation. Understanding the ethics issues inherent in situations helps to make decisions about a course of action.

Through ethics coaching, the outcome is not only to respond to immediate ethics challenges. It is also to facilitate learning about how to apply ethics decision making tools in future scenarios.

Ethics Management in Organisations

Social service organisations are typically rooted in social justice agendas, often beginning with one person or a small group wishing to alleviate suffering and address wrongs in society.

At the heart of these organisations is the drive towards a society in which everyone can live safely and with dignity. This compass keeps organisations’ plans and activities on track, but good intent and passion do not guarantee ethical work. Alongside effective and affordable ways of working, organisational integrity should be visible in every aspect of organisational life.

Ethics Consult works with organisations, over time, to align vision and business strategy with a context-specific ethics management roadmap. In the process, we:

  • Assess ethics risks and vulnerabilities particular to the organisation.
  • Use the assessment to develop a strategy and collaborate with key role players to turn risks into opportunities.
  • Support the implementation of an ethics management strategy over time.
Ethics Awareness and Training Programmes

Ethics Consult offers a variety of programmes to encourage greater awareness of, sensitivity to, and skill in managing ethics challenges, dilemmas and risk. These programmes are empowering in the manner in which they help you to:

  • Recognise and amplify situations in which ethical choices and actions contribute to a healthy and safe organisational and practice environment.
  • Expand ethics vocabulary to describe situations that cause moral unease. It is helpful to have the right kinds of words to say when something is bothersome or to be able to describe the ethical values and principles that have been transgressed.
  • Encourage an organisational or practice culture of talking about ethics and the way we relate to each other, our clients and other stakeholders as part of everyday business.
  • Develop skill in managing ethics challenges, risks and dilemmas.

A research element can be built into the awareness and training programmes in order to track progress as learning about ethics becomes infused in everyday work.
