Zelda Kruger

Hello!

Being an ethics practitioner excites me. I find joy in exploring ways to translate applied ethics concepts into value-added ways of thinking and doing things in the social services sector and mental health field of practice.

A varied career in social work that started off in 1988 has enriched my role as an ethics practitioner. I have worked in counselling, supervisory, managerial and leadership roles that have involved leadership development, employee wellness programmes and child and family services.

As a social worker, I have always been (and continue to be) fascinated by people: how we think, what motivates our behaviour, what keeps us stuck and our capacity to overcome. Looking at situations from an ethics point of view, gives us a particular angle from which to understand and talk about situations, about what matters and about what causes moral unease. It also gives us a framework that we can use to think about what is right and wrong, and to make decisions about what we should do when our values and principles are challenged.

Ethics Consult offers a platform through which to harness the value-add that ethics awareness can bring through intentionally managing ethics in organisations and mental health practices.

I lead Ethics Consult, do much of the work myself and collaborate with colleagues when the nature and size of assignments can benefit from this. In particular, I draw on the services of Mike Batley and Ntombi Mcoyi, who each bring an admirable skill set and years of experience to Ethics Consult. Ethics Consult is unambiguously advantaged by my association with them.

Should you be interested in my academic qualifications, here they are:

  • Master’s Degree in Applied Ethics, University of the Witwatersrand (2017)
  • Master’s Degree in Social Work Supervision, University of Pretoria (Cum Laude) (1996)
  • BA Soc Sc, Rands Afrikaans University (1987)

I am a Certified Ethics Officer with The Ethics Institute, registered social worker with the South African Council for Social Services Professions (SACSSP) and a member of the South African Association for Social Workers in Private Practice (SAASWIPP). Currently, I am the Chairperson of the SAASWIPP Ethics Portfolio Committee.
